Your Bluetooth Headphones Worked Yesterday – Now Windows Won’t Find Them

Start With the Boring Checks
Confirm Bluetooth is actually toggled on in Settings > Bluetooth & devices, and check that Airplane Mode hasn’t quietly switched itself on and disabled every radio on the machine, including Bluetooth. Also confirm the device itself is charged, within range, and switched into pairing/discoverable mode – the exact button combination for this varies by device, so check the manual if it’s been a while since you first paired it.
Fix Windows 11 Bluetooth with the Built-In Troubleshooter
Windows 11’s automated troubleshooter can reset the Bluetooth adapter, restart the relevant background services, and reinstall drivers without you touching Device Manager manually. Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, find Bluetooth in the list, and click Run. This resolves a meaningful share of cases on its own, especially when the issue started right after a Windows update.
Remove the Device and Pair It Again From Scratch
If a device that used to connect instantly now refuses to reconnect, the pairing itself has likely gone stale – this happens after firmware updates, driver changes, or a failed connection attempt corrupts the trust relationship between the two devices. Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices, find the accessory, click the three-dot menu, and select Remove device. Then pair it again from zero using Add device. This fixes more cases than people expect, precisely because re-pairing forces both sides to renegotiate the connection cleanly.
Restarting the Bluetooth Support Service
The background service that manages every Bluetooth connection can get stuck without any visible symptom besides Bluetooth simply not working. Open the Services app (search for it in the Start menu), scroll to Bluetooth Support Service, right-click it, and choose Restart. If it’s not running at all, right-click and select Start instead.
Updating or Rolling Back the Bluetooth Driver
Open Device Manager, expand Bluetooth, right-click your adapter, and choose Update driver. If the problem started immediately after a driver update rather than before it, the opposite fix – right-click, Properties, Driver tab, Roll Back Driver – can be more effective, since it reverts to the version that was working before Windows Update intervened.
Network Reset: The Last Resort
If nothing above works, a full network reset restores every network adapter, including Bluetooth, to factory default settings. Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset, and click Reset now. This is a broader fix than the others – it also resets Wi-Fi and Ethernet configurations – so treat it as the step you try after the more targeted fixes above haven’t worked, not the first thing to reach for. Most people fix Windows 11 Bluetooth within the first three steps above, so treat the network reset as a true last resort rather than a starting point.
